A few weeks ago, I had a delightful morning at Thameside Studios with the artist and printmaker J. Yuen Ling Chiu to explore new techniques for making work as part of my 20/20 UAL residency at Wolverhampton Art Gallery.
She ran me and the terrific Martine Rouleau through the various pros and cons of Photopolymer etching, a technique that transfers an image onto film which can be tinkered with before it’s turned onto a plate, and Photolithography, which is an industrial process for high volume reproduction and can be printed on anything.
I’m planning to take works in the permanent collection at the gallery, particularly paintings by Edwin Butler Bayliss and populate them with stories of empire workers - a missing history in the collection. These methods and leads are an exciting new pathway for my work, and will be accompanied by an artist film exploring my journey with the residency and the behemoth that is decolonisation.
The day was augmented by a bike ride on the Thameside path.
