Year Zero: Black Country

Year Zero: Black Country is the archival film that seeded everything that came after. Newsreel and home movie footage threaded with the spoken testimony of a Smethwick that had just been the site of the 1964 by-election, in the years either side of Sandwell's industrial decline.

Acquired into the Arts Council Collection in 2014. Derek Jarman Award nominee. The film led directly to Sikhs of Smethwick (BBC4, 2016) and the multi-part series A Very British History (BBC4, 2 seasons), and feeds the photography series The Exiles and the current Paths You Walk commission.
