Contemporary Art Society acquisition of Seamstress Furnacemen (2022)
I am deeply humbled and honoured to have been celebrated at the Contemporary Art Society’s Annual Acquisitions Dinner, held at the magnificent Dulwich Picture Gallery. The evening was truly surreal—marked by inspiring conversations with fellow artists, curators, and generous donors, all gathered to celebrate British art. The highlight of the night was the acquisition of my works, ‘Seamstress’ and ‘Furnacemen’ (2022), for The New Art Gallery Walsall through the CAS fund. As someone whose artistic practice is rooted in the history and soul of the Black Country and the West Midlands, knowing these pieces have found a permanent home in Walsall is deeply meaningful. It feels as though the stories I tell—especially those of the South Asian migrant communities who shaped Britain’s industrial landscape—are finally returning to their source. Moments like this reaffirm the privilege and purpose of being an artist. Having my work recognised and preserved for public enjoyment is the greatest honour I could hope for, and I am profoundly grateful to everyone who has championed my journey. Meeting so many brilliant Midlands artists and the iconic Singh Twins, and sharing the evening with dedicated supporters like Stephen Snoddy and the team at The New Art Gallery Walsall, was unforgettable. A special thanks to the Contemporary Art Society for their unwavering support—placing 68 artworks in 31 collections last year alone, they play a vital role in nurturing the UK’s cultural ecosystem. My heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who has been a part of my story. Onwards!
