The Exiles
The New Art Gallery Walsall
Following the NAE Nottingham presentation, The Exiles was exhibited at The New Art Gallery Walsall from November 2022 to February 2023. The gallery — designed by Caruso St John architects and home to the Garman Ryan Collection — provided a striking context for the large-format tableaux, with the Black Country landscape visible through the building's distinctive windows.
The Walsall installation included all five of the large-format composite tableaux: Dayshift, The Seamstress, Furnace Men, Payday, and The Bridge / Forbidden Embrace. Each work is constructed from hundreds of individually photographed elements — people, objects, interiors, landscapes — composited into a single panoramic scene that functions as a "silent film in a single frame."
The exhibition was accompanied by a selection of production materials — sketches, location photographs, and behind-the-scenes documentation — offering visitors an insight into the complex process of constructing each tableau.
